Summary of the boor

May be this subject is important for the fourth semester who study in IKIP,,I would like share and I hope you can use it for your references....


PERSONS IN THE PLAY
Helena Ivanovna Popov is a young widow, mistress of a country estate
Grigori Stepanovitch Smirnov is proprietor of a country estate
Luka is servant of Mrs.Popov


 
Mrs. Popov’s husband died. Mrs. Popov have grieved in a long time. Seven months her husband died. In grieved, a man came to Mrs. Popov , his name is Smarnov. He said that Mrs. Popov’s husband have indebted to him and she must paid indebted her husband. But Mrs. Popov did not want to paid it for today, with reason that she bad mood discussed about it. Because of it Smirnov was angry, he still wait in Mrs. Popov’s home until she pay debt’s her husband. In her sad, she still not pay to Smirnov. They will be duel discuss about the debt’s her husband. During the duel, suddenly Smirnov falling in love with Mrs.Popov and said her feel to Mrs. Popov. He never in his life met one like her.

The Analysis of The Boor
1. Plot
a. Exposition : introduction the play
When Mrs.Popov at home and suddenly a man come in, his name is Smirnov.
b. Complication : When a man came to the Mrs. Popov’s home to collect the debt
c. Crisis : a man did not want Mrs. Popov pay the debt day after tomorrow
d. Climax : duel between Mrs. Popov and Smirnov. Smirnov still need the money today but Mrs. Popov can’t pay today.
e. Falling action : Smirnov said love to Mrs. Popov
f. Resolution : Mrs. Popov ask Smirnov to go from her home.
2. Character and characterization
a. Major/maid
Because Mrs. Popov and Smirnov are the important figure at the center of the story’s action. The first story when Smirnov meet Mrs. Popov until Smirnov falling in love with Mrs.Popov. They always act on this drama. Beside it, without Mrs. Popov and Smirnov, conflict in this drama never happened and can not show to reader.
b. Minor
Luka in this drama as servant of Mrs. Popov. He is not important figure. Luka not always follows in this drama. He only as complementary player.

3. Setting :
- Mrs. Popov’s home
Scene : A well-furnished reception-room in Mrs. Popov’s home, sitting upon a sofa. Popov has locked herself in the house in mourning
- The present
This drama shows that what happen in the real of life and often happen in modern era.
4. Point of view:
First person point of view (narrator as character in this drama)
Conflict:
External conflict (man vs man)
Conflict in this drama happened when Smirnov came to home’s Mrs. Popov for accustom husband’s debt, but Mrs. Popov bad mood to discuss about it. This is caused Smirnov angry and Mrs. Popov still did not want to pay husband’s debt. Mrs. Popov said that she will pay tomorrow but Smirnov ask to Mrs. Popov pay it in this day. So conflict in this drama between Mrs. Popov and Smirnov (man vs man).
5. Tone and style
This drama shows up lighten the mood. When the duel happen, it show the serious of them.
The character of Smirnov is boorish it show at Smirnov argues that women are incapable of loving "anybody except a lapdog," to which Popova argues that she wholeheartedly loved her husband although he cheated on her and disrespected her. The argument deteriorates into another shouting match about paying back the debt. During this argument Popov insults Smirnov by calling him a bear, amongst other names, saying, "You're a boor! A coarse bear! A Bourbon! A monster!"
The author shows his attitude when Smirnov calls for a duel, not caring that Popov is a woman. Popov, in turn, enthusiastically agrees and goes off to get a pair of guns her husband owned. There are funny and confused when Popov returns with the pistols, Smirnov makes his love confession. Popov oscillates between refusing him and ordering him to leave and telling him to stay. Eventually, the two get close and kiss each other just as Luka returns with the gardener and coachman.
6. Theme
The author wrote The Boor at the end of his life. It is a one act play and meant to be funny, the plot is about a broken-hearted grieving widow who learns to love when The Boor who creditor crashes in upon her mourning to demand payment of the money owed to him.
7. Symbol
In this drama said that “I have burred myself within these four walls”. It is mean that Mrs. Popov as women that always confine herself. And the dialogues between Mrs Popov and Smirnov it means they are stubborn :
SMIRNOV: And I am in the mood to fly up the chimney with my feet in the air if I can't lay hands on that interest to-morrow. They'll seize my estate!
MRS. POPOV: Day after to-morrow you will receive the money.
SMIRNOV: I don't need the money day after to-morrow; I need it to-day.
MRS. POPOV: I'm sorry I can't pay you today.
SMIRNOV: And I can't wait until day after to-morrow.
MRS. POPOV: But what can I do if I haven't it?
SMIRNOV: So you can't pay?
MRS. POPOV: I cannot.
SMIRNOV: Hm! Is that your last word?
MRS. POPOV: My last.
SMIRNOV: Absolutely?
MRS. POPOV: Absolutely.
